As a parent of a child with scoliosis you’ve just been told you should you just “Watch and Wait” to see if scoliosis gets worse. Huh??? You wonder: “Isn’t there some kind of non-surgical scoliosis treatment in Dallas Fort Worth that is available?” The answer is most definitely – “Yes!”

The problem is that often parents are not made aware of the existence of these alternatives by their doctors, which is why you are here looking for answers.

What your doctor probably also didn’t tell you was that latest research in scoliosis indicates that early intervention is key in stopping the progression of scoliosis curvatures. According to a recent study in the Journal of Neurosurgery Pediatrics January 2011 it recommended orthotic or brace treatment in curvatures of 20 degrees of Cobb angle or more regardless of age or curvature location.

As the regional office for Scoliosis Systems we offer a comprehensive non-surgical approach to scoliosis treatment in Dallas Fort Worth area we offer a combination of scoliosis specific exercises, a unique dynamic tension scoliosis brace combined with upper cervical specific adjustments for our patients.

Schroth Method of Scoliosis Exercises

Schroth Method are a series of scoliosis specific exercise that have been clinically proven to help patients manage scoliosis to halt or reverse curvatures without the use rigid scoliosis bracing or surgery. They were originally developed in Germany in the 1930’s and are still in use today as a therapist guided treatment for scoliosis. The exercises are designed to help distortions of the rib cage to assist with scoliosis de-rotating the curvatures of the spine.

Our Doctors are Schroth Method Certified Instructors incorporate this methodology i specifically designed scoliosis exercise and breathing techniques designed to reduce and stabilize scoliosis in conjunction with using SpineCor’s flexible dynamic scoliosis brace.

SpineCor Scoliosis Brace

SpineCor is a unique dynamic tension scoliosis brace that assisting the body in correcting its scoliosis curvatures. While traditional static braces for scoliosis are more like body casts and can result in muscle atrophy as a side effects the SpineCor dynamic tension bands actually helps muscles of the spine move in corrected movement patterns so it’s more like being in physiotherapy as it is worn.

Our Doctors are the most experienced Certified SpineCor Providers in the United States. Over the years Dr. Marc Lamantia and Dr. Gary Deutchman have fit hundreds of adults and thousands of children with scoliosis with the SpineCor brace and now are providing this type of non-surgical scoliosis treatment in Dallas Fort Worth.

Because the SpineCor brace is soft and allows a patient freedom of movement it is easily concealed under their clothing so patient compliance is much higher than with bulky, rigid braces that severely restrict movement.

Specific Scoliosis Adjustments

Recent studies have shown a significant correlation between problems in the upper cervical spine and scoliosis. In fact, the top bone in the spine called the Atlas (from Greek Mythology – holding up the world) has been found to be the most important vertebra to stay in alignment because it provides proper support for our head and allows for a clear passage way for our spinal cord down the spine. Atlas misalignment has been clinically shown to contribute to scoliosis.

Because of this the Atlas Orthogonal methodology was developed as a gentle but effective way of realigning the Atlas. A precise X-ray analysis is used to calculate the exact position of the Atlas so that an Orthogonal Instrument can re-position it, if needed. If your scoliosis appears to have a contributory atlas component then Atlas Orthogonal treatment can be provided in our office.

Specific Scoliosis Exercises – Now Available in Fort Worth

Looking for Scoliosis Exercises?

Understand not all scoliosis exercises are created equal. The fact is that some exercises programs can actually aggravate your scoliosis curvatures! So it’s important to find an exercise program that is taught by Certified professionals trained in providing “scoliosis specific exercises”.

Specific Scoliosis Exercises” are specially designed to provide scoliosis correction for spinal curvatures. Scoliosis being a unilateral rotation dysfunction, (in other words the spine twists in a helix in one direction) the exercises needed to correct it must be done in unilateral direction to counter act the curvatures.

That is why most exercises are not good for scoliosis; any exercise taught to be done bilaterally to someone having scoliosis have the potential for doing more harm than good. For instance, yoga’s great exercise for someone without scoliosis as it helps people patients avoid developing postural dysfunctions by keeping the body’s mobility in all directions by teaching poses to be done on both sides of the body. Yet, with a movement pattern dysfunction like scoliosis certain poses done bilaterally can actually cause a person with scoliosis to fall further into their curvature patterns and worsen their condition.

For instance, a stretch like the one being shown to de-rotate the lumbar spine but will aggravate the curvature in the thoracic spine and should be avoided if you have a double curvature.

That is not to say that yoga is absolutely bad for you if you have scoliosis. It only to say that unless your routine reviewed and modified to fit your body’s specific needs by a trained professional with in-depth knowledge of what types of exercise are right for your spinal curvatures and they design a specific Yoga program to fit your needs, there is a good chance you will inadvertently worsen your condition when performing the wrong exercise on the side your body is already twisting.

Schroth Method scoliosis exercises are specific designed for the treatment of scoliosis. They are clinically proven to help patients to halt, manage or reverse scoliosis curvatures and avoid surgery or rigid scoliosis bracing. Originally developed in Germany in the 1930’s they are still in use today throughout Europe. These therapist guided exercises are designed to help reduce curvatures and rotation of the spine and help diminish rib cage distortions to assist with pain or deformity scoliosis symptoms. Your routine will be unique for your condition as with scoliosis exercises, there is no such thing as “one-size-fits-all” approach.

Our doctors will evaluate if you are a candidate for the Schroth Method as part of a comprehensive scoliosis program. If so, our Schroth Certified Instructors will incorporate this methodology of specifically designed scoliosis exercise and breathing techniques into a program designed specifically for you to reduce and stabilize scoliosis in conjunction with using the SpineCor flexible dynamic scoliosis brace.

Scoliosis Brace – Static vs Dynamic

Which Scoliosis Brace Should I Choose?

The introduction of a new concept for the treatment of scoliosis with corrective movement principles lead to the development of a revolutionary dynamic scoliosis brace in the early 1990’s it has not yet caught hold in much of the conventional medical world. The standard of care in that arena is still the hard or static scoliosis brace, despite the fact that studies have proven the static approach does not work. Take a look at a recent study showing the lack of effectiveness of hard bracing to reduce the incidents of surgery in a scoliosis population.

Static Scoliosis Brace Vs. Dynamic Scoliosis Brace

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: the effect of (Rigid) brace treatment on the incidence of surgery.

A study performed at Children’s Research Centre and Orthopaedic Department, Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Dublin, Ireland confirmed that in Adolescents, SpineCor has a 93% success rate after 2 years post brace wearing, whereas the Boston Brace has not been able to show any success in creating curvature reduction after the same time frame.
